Change may be ever-present in our lives, but effective change — change that makes us better and happier — requires certain elements to be in place. Without them, change is simply an interruption and an inconvenience.
Make change work for you by making sure you’ve got all three elements in place.
1) Dissatisfaction. This might sound counter-intuitive, but you’re only going to be willing to change as deep as your dissatisfaction goes. If you are okay with the current situation, it’s going to be hard to change.
2) Vision. Once you’ve realized that your dissatisfaction for a particular circumstance runs deep, you need to create a vision of how it could be better. Be specific with this vision! To be powerful it needs to be exact.
3) Plan. As soon as you’ve got your vision nailed down you must create a plan on how to make your vision a reality. What is the very first thing you have to do? What can you do today and in the future to replace dissatisfaction with satisfaction?
Even when those things are place you still have one big roadblock to take care of: resistance. If you or those around you are resistant to change, your dissatisfaction will have to multiplied by a very strong vision and an incredibly useful plan in order for change to occur.
