One of the things we see most often in our work is how often individuals underestimate the power of their thinking—both conscious and subconscious. They often assume that the most powerful part of their lives is what they do, but every action starts with a thought, and every thought starts with an intention.

To truly change your life you need to start examining your intentions.

Once people begin to examine their intentions, they are surprised to discover that their intentions were good—even when their behaviour was not. This is a fundamental principle of NLP and a truth that can have a dramatic impact on the way you relate to yourself or others.

Not sure you believe it?

Think of the last time you had a misunderstanding with someone. You probably had good intentions going into that discussion. You probably wanted to explain your point of view, to seek understanding, or even reconciliation. Maybe you felt disrespected previously and you intended to reclaim the respect you deserve. The odds are that you had good intentions — even if the outcome was less than positive.

Understanding our intentions isn’t always easy. Try asking yourself these questions:

1)      Why do you do the things you do? Whether it’s running your own business or being emotionally distant from your spouse or partner, why are you doing it?

2)      Is there something you’d rather be doing? Why?

3)      What is the payoff you get? How does your current circumstance make that payoff desirable?

Finding your intentions is a powerful process—and a positive one. Trust your intentions; they’ll lead you to your core goodness.
