Many people struggle with phobias — a strong, irrational fear that creates friction and struggle, and in serious cases, may even severely impede a person’s quality of life. There are hundreds of phobias, from fear of spiders to fear of social interactions.
In this post we’ll show you how you can use NLP to cure phobias.
First, it’s important to make sure that you are actually dealing with a phobia and not just a fear. The majority of individuals struggle with some sort of fear or another, but a phobia is an entirely different matter altogether.
How can you tell the difference? If you are struggling with a fear, you can normally make a decision to work through the discomfort and overcome it. If it’s a phobia, you tend to run from the situation.
NLP offers a Fast Phobia Cure that can safely take you through a traumatic experience at a distance. This way you are dissociated from the normal physical response your body produces in the face of your phobia. Even though you will be imagining this phobic situation, it’s important that you feel entirely safe. Before beginning the following steps, make sure you are in a situation where you feel safe with those around you and your physical surroundings.
Here are the steps outlined in the NLP Fast Phobia Cure:
- Recognise the phobia you want to cure.
- Imagine yourself in a movie theatre. Walk to the middle of the front row and have a seat.
- Imagine yourself leaving your body and floating around outside of it. Float to a seat in the balcony, where you can watch yourself watching the theater screen.
- Place the starting point of your fear on the screen in the form of a colored slide. Run through your phobia all the way to the end. Remember to watch yourself from the balcony.
- Freeze the final frame of the movie and make it black and white. Take yourself out of the balcony and into the screen. Mentally run the movie backwards as if rewinding it at a fast speed with circus or cartoon music playing. Freeze the first frame of the movie.
- Walk back out of the picture and sit in the middle of the front row. When you’re sitting comfortably, mentally white out the entire screen.
- Repeat steps three through six as much as you need to, remembering to always test for a phobic response each time.
If you’re suffering from a phobia, give these steps a try! You’ll find that your phobia is lessened to a fear and soon you will be able to work around it instead of running from it.
